According to one of my favorite websites, Holiday Insights, today is “Big Wind Day,” being that the strongest gale force ever recorded took place on this day. Coincidentally, “wind” is a popular subject in the rock and roll lyrics book; hence, our ten favorite songs about that which can’t be seen, but certainly can be felt.
10) Bob Seger‘s “Against the Wind” – A Fusion 45 favorite, featuring Glen Frey on background vox.
9) Donovan‘s “Catchthe Wind” – His first single, long since covered by everyone from Flatt & Scruggs to Claudine Longet.
8) Elton John‘s “Candle in the Wind” – The original version is the only one allowed in my house.
7) Traffic‘s “Walking in the Wind”
6) Frank Sinatra‘s “Summer Wind” – Others have taken a hack at it, but Blue Eyes’ version is perpetually de rigeur.
5) The Byrd‘s “Hickory Wind” – They created the genre and the rest keep trying to catch up.
4) Kansas‘ “Dust in the WInd” – Acoustic pop perfection.
3) David Bowie‘s “Wild Is the Wind” – A captivating song that never got enough attention.
2) Bob Dylan‘s “Blowin’ in the Wind” – Of course…
1) The Association‘s “Windy” – Quite possibly the perfect pop song.
