One-Hit Wonders: Deodato

Deodato - Also Sprach Zarathustra (CTI Records, 1973)
Some months back, we considered Deodato‘s Prelude record, an album we found tucked away in the corner of Sal’s Boutique (here). Today, his one hit from 1973 tops the bill.
Eumire Almeida Deodato is a Brazilian-born multi-instrumentalist whose resume includes work as a sideman (for Astrud Gilberto), as a session player (with Bette Midler and Frank Sinatra, among others) and producer (most notably of Kool And The Gang).
Deodato is also a writer and performer who creates music for TV and movies and has recorded nearly twenty-five albums (his first being 1964′s Inutil Paisagem, his latest being 2010′s The Crossing).
In between, he scored his lone Top 40 hit, a disco-funk version of Richard Strauss’ classical gas, “Also Sprach Zarathustra.” Commonly known as the theme to 2001: A Space Odyssey, his version reached Number 2 in March 1973.
