Going For The Gold: Steve Martin

Back in July, we hesitantly profiled Steve Martin as a “one hit wonder,” despite the fact he’s been a “hit” on numerous fronts as “a proficient (albeit hobbyist) banjo picker, acclaimed actor, producer, comedian and best-selling writer.”
Now it’s time to look where the gold has come from during his recording career.
“He could’ve won a Grammy, buried in his jammies” but, instead, he scored himself a gold record in 1978 with his brilliant “King Tut.”
Released after rolling it out on SNL in the spring of ’78, “King Tut” topped out at Number 17 on the Top 40 and won itself a gold record in August.
For the record, his 1977 album, Let’s Get Small, went platinum, A Wild and Crazy Guy, which included “Tut,” went double platinum, and Comedy Is Not Pretty! went gold.
