For those who have followed Video Classics (and WNEW in general) for a while, you know when we say ‘classic rock’ we mean really classic rock. Songs from the ’60s and ’70s are the norm, and the ’80s (which are now a quarter-century ago) even start to feel a little modern by comparison. So can a song from as recently as 1994 qualify as a “Video Classic”, or even classic rock? Well, today we’ll make a go of it as we step into the not-so-wayback machine to take a look and listen at “Euro-Trash Girl”, by Cracker …
Cracker formed back at the dawn on the nineties when singer David Lowery stepped away from the remnants of his former band (the oddly-named Camper Van Beethoven) and began looking for a new crew to cut some demos with. He ultimately hooked up with guitarist Johnny Hickman and bassist Davey Faragher. The trio then picked up a drummer (Greg Weatherford to begin with, but ultimately they’d end up rotating through several percussionists before settling on Frank Funaro for the long run). After a few demos and a few releases, the group released what is still considered their magnum opus, the album Kerosene Hat, in 1993.
While it was the single “Low” that brought the band widespread fame, the album also included the single “Euro-Trash Girl” as a hidden track, appearing in the somewhat sophomoric position of Track #69. Hidden it may have been, but the 8-minute song was hardly a newfound treasure for fans, as it had previously been released on the band’s EP Tucson. “Euro-Trash Girl”would finally get its own release as a single in its own right in 1994. “Euro-Trash Girl” holds the distinction of being the only song from Tucson that has every appeared on one of Cracker’s full-length albums.
