Though David Gates and his crew had been successful writing and producing music for others, their first album as Bread failed to penetrate the top half of the Billboard 200. They decided to give it one last shot before dissolving into crumbs.

Gate,s along with original band members James Griffin and Robb Royer, penned “Make It With You,” the kind of soft-rock ballad for which Bread would become known. One of the first four songs recorded for their On the Waters album, “Make It With You” was the first single released from the set and the first Bread single to make the chart. Dropping into radio programmers mailboxes in June 1970, it spent a steady 8 weeks making its ascent to the #1 spot on August 22, where it stayed for a week.

Having sold over a million copies, it’s also an oft-covered song with versions done by Aretha Franklin, Teddy Pendergrass and Mark Cohn, to name a few.

For their follow-up, Bread would go back to their first album and re-record “It Don’t matter to Me,” which hit #10 the following month.

Lyrics
Hey have you ever tried
Really reaching out for the other side?
I may be climbing on rainbows
But baby here goes
Dreams they're for those who sleep
