On this day in 1854, old-school march guy John Philip Sousa was born in the place where marches never go out of style: Washington, D.C. He wrote all the big ones — “Stars & Stripes Forever,” “The Washington Post March” — and, we surmise, was the key inspiration for our Top 10 “Marching Songs” of All Time.
10. Death Cab for Cutie - “Marching Bands of Manhattan”: A pop ballad for very s…l..o…w marching bands…
9. My Chemical Romance - “March of the Black Parade”: Great song…and actually has a march beat…
8. Nine Inch Nails - “March of the Pigs”: This one has a march beat, too…if you’re marching around a basement club in L.A.
7. Sum 41 - “March of the Dogs”: Something a little more traditional…
6. Bluesiana Triangle - “When the Saints Go Marching In”: No wait…we meant this one’s a little more traditional…
5. Dave Matthews - “Ants Marching”: The sound of all those Dave Matthews fans following Dave to the next festival…
4. Coldplay - “Prospekt’s March”: Not exactly a march but…
3. Modest Mouse - “March Into the Sea”: Featuring a marching man in a bear suit…
2. “The Wedding March”: OK, JK. How about “I Ain’t Marching Anymore” by Arlo Guthrie? It’s a hippie march…
1. The Heartstoppers - “Marching Out of Your Life”: A Motown-ish march, it’s the perfect beat and perfect message for our #1.
