Best Sellers From The ’90′s: Creed And “My Own Prison”
Creed - My Own Prison (Wind Up, 1997)
Originally recorded for less than $6,000, Creed‘s debut, My Own Prison, ended up selling 6 million copies.

My Own Prison was recorded in a couple of different studios in South Florida and released independently. Later, Soundgarden producer Ron Saint-Germain was brought in to remix the album and punch up the band’s post-grunge sound. Released six months later on Wind-Up Records, My Own Prison slowly but surely developed a following within the rock underground.
According to legend, frontman Robert Stapp wrote most of the lyrics while living in his car, a temporary home after he had fled his strict religious upbringing. His religious background ultimately found its way into the albums ten songs, pieces that raised questions and posed answers about spiritual and social issues.
My Own Prison found little support from the mainstream but the underground supported it in the millions. It reached #22 on the Billboard album chart and has sold 6 million copies since its release in June 1997.
