Going For The Gold: The Jacksons
The Jacksons Perform "Enjoy Yourself" (YouTube)
After selling 30+ million records for Motown as the Jackson 5, the kids grew up, moved to Epic and sold another kabillion albums. Along with a gold and three platinum long players, they spun a gold and two platinum singles. Let’s give ‘em a listen.
The first of their shiny singles was, in fact, their first single, the bubbly party funk of “Enjoy Yourself.” Taken from The Jacksons, it was released in 1976 to a #2 showing on the R&B chart and a #6 placement on the pop chart. Though it went gold right away, it took about a dozen years to finally hit platinum in 1989.
It took just a fraction of that time to see their second platinum record soar from release to million-seller. The mega-hit Destiny was the place where the Jacksons self-written and self-produced “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)” found a home. Released in 1979, it was a #3 R&B hit and saw #7 on the pop chart, scoring platinum within 6 months of its release.
Last of their million-sellers was their duet with Mick Jagger called “State of Shock.” Released in ’84, it hit a million copies within a couple of months, landing at #3 on the pop charts, #4 on the R&B grid.
