Best Sellers From The ’90′s: Stone Temple Pilots And “Purple”
Stone Temple Pilots - Purple (Atlantic, 1994)
The second album in the Stone Temple Pilots‘ repertoire, Purple was a conscious attempt by the band to depart from the grungy sound of their debut.

For Stone Temple Pilots, the long-standing criticism of their first album, Core, was that it was far too derivative of Seattle’s pioneering grunge artists. The year-and-a-half that followed found the band touring incessantly behind the record, frequently working on new material during sound checks.
The result was a wealth of nearly forty songs available to the band and producer Brendon O’Brien when they arrived in Minneapolis to record Purple, their sophomore effort.
Though critical complaints persisted, Purple pointed STP toward a more straight ahead rock sound that won over record buyers, who rocketed the album to #1 on the album chart. Eighteen years later, it stands as one of the band’s biggest sellers, moving well over 6 million copies.
