“We were trying to reconstruct ‘Come See About Me’ in a way, and somehow it turned into ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’.”

So said songwriter Lamont Dozier, the legendary scribe who contributed to Brian Holland’s melody and Eddie Holland’s title to make the Supremes‘ ninth #1 hit, “You Can’t Hurry Love.”

Though it followed two songs that failed to find #1 like eight of their predecessors, “You Can’t Hurry Love” made a steady run toward the top spot. Clocking in at #66 on August 13, 1966, the song jumped to #28 the following week. Two more weeks (at #7 and #4) ensued before the group landed at #1 on September 10.

Another week at #1 found them holding off the Beatles‘ “Yellow Submarine” and enjoying the ninth of their dozen #1 singles.
