Video Classics: ‘Fire’ – Jimi Hendrix

“Fire”, by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, is a song whose name you might have heard elsewhere before. The title is a popular one for songs. Bruce Springsteen, U2 and Emerson, Lake and Palmer, among others, have recorded numbers with that title. But Hendrix’ is the unquestionably the funkiest.
While the song has sexual overtones (like many of Hendrix’ efforts), it actually arose from fairly innocent beginnings. From Wikipedia:
[the lyrics stemmed] from a cold New Year’s Eve in Folkestone, England after a gig. Noel Redding, bass player for the Jimi Hendrix Experience invited Jimi and Cathy as guests at his mother’s house. Jimi asked her if he could stand next to her fireplace to warm himself. She agreed, but her Great Dane was in the way, hence the line, “Aw, move over, Rover, and let Jimi take over…”
While the song was originally titled on the single as “Let Me Light Your Fire,” it was subsequently entitled simply “Fire.” And it’s this version by which it and its covers are known, including its most famous remake by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers in 1983.
