The Dave Matthews Band created their debut album, Under the Table and Dreaming, out of many years on the road, honing their craft and building their repertoire. That same work ethic found them touring incessantly from 1994 through 1996, developing the dozen songs that became Crash.

“Developing” is a key word here: of the dozen songs on Crash, only two were brand new, the rest having been part of their concert repertoire for some time. (“Tripping Billies,” for example, had actually been released on their 1993 indie set Remember Two Things.)

Though they chose to retain Dreaming producer Steve Lillywhite for their sophomore effort, the DMB decided upon a looser, funkier vibe for Crash. A prime example is “Crash Into Me,” a loose-limbed single that banged its way into the Top 40. “Too Much” and “So Much to Say” also found their way onto the radio and MTV, solidifying their star status.

Crash debuted at #2 (the place where it peaked), was nominated for a Best Rock Album Grammy and sold 2 million copies within 6 months of its release. Sixteen years later, it’s a best seller from the ’90s with over 7 million copies sold.
