Best-Sellers From The ’90′s: Pearl Jam’s “Vs.”
Pearl Jam - Vs. (Epic, 1993)
In a rallying cry against corporate conventions, Pearl Jam released Vs. without any companion videos and without a tour of major arenas in its support. But it didn’t matter: the album sold 7 million copies for Epic Records, their corporate patron.

Given the band’s attitude toward corporate rock, it’s no surprise they chose Vs. as the record’s title (and then decided against stamping in on the cover). And it’s no surprise the record was a decidedly more raw, less structured set of music than it’s predecessor, Ten.
The album was written while the band toured behind Ten and was then recorded a number of times as a 12-song in-studio concert. When they finally found the “date” that did justice to the songs, it became the album.
Anti-corporate or not, Vs. nonetheless debuted at #1 on the album chart — though it was dropped just a week earlier as a vinyl only release — and sold nearly three million copies in its first week on the shelves. Since then, Vs. has sold over 7 million copies.

Never acted up before
Don't go on me now
I swear, I never took it for granted
